Why it’s Essential to See at Least One Red Sox Game Each Summer

Let’s face it, us Bostonians are wicked proud of our big stereotype being die-hard sports fans, especially when it comes to the Red Sox. A lot of people in the area actually don’t even like baseball that much, but we feel it is our American duty to support our teams. We all know Sweet Caroline by heart, and our mouths water at the mention of a Fenway Frank. Our love of baseball carries us through every season, no matter how they are doing winning-wise. There are a few reasons why I personally believe it is absolutely essential as a person living in or around Boston to see a Red Sox game at least once (if not, many more times) during the summer.

First, on a beautiful day in the city, there is nothing better strolling down Yawkey Way and seeing those banners around the park, and people-watching those obnoxious Massholes as they hurry by. We are not known to be a slow and laid back city, and you can definitely feel the hyper energy through the crowds. My favorite people to watch in the crowds is the kids personally, because their awe and amazement is plastered on their faces in a huge smile as they hold their parent’s hand.

Second, us Bostonians consider Fenway Park a historical site, not just an arena. It should probably be one of the stops along the freedom trail, but since it’s not, it is definitely a place to go out of your way to get to in order to experience Boston’s real history. The Great Bambino (Babe Ruth for all you rookies out there), the Pesky Pole, the birth place of extra innings in the game, and the Green Monster (that was not always green!) are great stories to tell friends and family who come to visit you and want to see a game.

Boston also holds a record in the country for being the “Drunkest City in America”, while that might not be the best fact in some situations, having a cold beer with friends at a game after a long day at the office seems to be the perfect remedy for a hard day. Pair it with a Fenway Frank or some Cracker Jacks and you have got my idea of what a sophisticated lunch really is, Boston style. Not only that, but there are plenty of bars and pubs right around Fenway that are great to go to before or after games, because they become even more alive than usual when there is a game going on that day. If a bar or pub (which can get rowdy occasionally) are not what you are looking for, there are plenty of restaurants around the Kenmore area, from cheaper places to more finer fare if you are looking to get away from the crowds belting out “Take me Out to the Ballgame”.

Boston is one of the most historical cities in the country, and people born and raised here tend to pride themselves on every aspect and tradition Boston holds. While most bright young Bostonians go to work everyday and act professional and poised, every stereotype and quirk we have seems to come out at events like a good ole Red Sox Game. If you have never been and you are from Massachusetts, shame on you. This is an essential summer activity to take family and friends where you are 100% guaranteed to have a ball.
