Why Boston Dominates Rio 2016

teamusa_rio_olympics_2016

Anything and everything seems to be about the Olympics in this month of August, and with athletes preforming better than ever, it completely makes sense. USA is still in the lead by far with a ton of Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals, and our nation is incredibly proud of our Olympians. Massachusetts has reason to be especially proud, however, because in our small New England state we have our fair share of athletes. Of course, more populated states have more representation (California has a whopping 124!!)

Here are the 13 athletes from Massachusetts if you did not already know them:

  1. Eli Dershwitz: Fencing, from Sherborn Mass.
  2.  Andrew Campbell, Jr.: Rowing from Cambridge Mass.
  3. Abbey D’Agostino: Track and Field (500m) from Topsfield Mass.
  4. Michael DiSanto:  Rowing from Boston Mass.
  5. Shalane Flanagan:  Track and Field (Marathon) from Marblehead Mass.
  6. Victoria Folayan:  Rugby from Boston Mass.
  7. Sean Furey: Track and Field (Javelin) from Methuen Mass.
  8. Michael Hixon: Diving from Amherst Mass.
  9. Madison Hughes: Rugby from Lancaster Mass.
  10. Elena Pirozhkova: Wrestling from Greenfield Mass.
  11. Aly Raisman: Gymnastics from Needham Mass.
  12. Sarah Scherer: Shooting from Woburn Mass.
  13. Gevvie Stone: Rowing from Newton Mass.

For 13 people, we represent 8 different sports, which is a pretty good variety.

Our youngest competitor is Eli Dershwitz, who is 21 years old in Rio right now. Our oldest is a marathon runner named Shalane Flanagan, who is 36 years old. Each of the athletes is doing their part as not only an American, but as a Bostonian, in securing Team USA’s top spot at Rio 2016. We can’t wait for them to return and share their glory with all of us!
